Devotees flock to ‘Buddha reincarnation’ in Nepal
RATANPUR, Nepal (AP) — The teenage boy revered by many as a reincarnation of Buddha sat silently in the jungle as he blessed his devotees Wednesday with a light tap on the head, which they consider the touch of the divine.
His face was still, his long hair spilled over his white robe, and he never said a word.
The followers of Ram Bahadur Bamjan, 18, believe he has been meditating without food and water since he was first spotted in the jungles of southern Nepal in 2005, when believers say he spent months without moving, sitting with his eyes closed beneath a tree.
Bamjan re-emerged this week to meet his followers, who have come by the thousands to see him in the jungles of Ratanpur, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Katmandu.
“I got a chance to see God today,” Bishnu Maya Khadka, a housewife, said after receiving Bamjan’s blessing Wednesday. “They say he is Buddha, but for me he is just God.”
Bamjan was expected to address his followers on Nov. 18 and then retreat again into the jungle for meditation, said Kamal Tamang, a Buddhist priest.
Bamjan received the pilgrims from atop a podium covered in yellow cloth and placed before a massive tree. He looked healthy and strong and showed no signs of starvation or dehydration.
Buddhism, which has about 325 million followers, mostly in Asia, teaches that every soul is reincarnated after death in another bodily form.
But several Buddhist scholars have been skeptical of the claims that Bamjan is a reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in southwestern Nepal roughly 2,500 years ago and became revered as the Buddha, or Enlightened One.
“Being Buddha means the last birth and the highest level that can be achieved. There can be no reincarnation of Buddha, even though Buddhists believe in life after death,” said Rakesh, a Buddhist scholar in Katmandu who goes by only one name.
“Meditating without food does not prove that he is the reincarnation of Buddha,” said Min Bahadur Shakya of the Nagarjuna Institute of Exact Methods, a Buddhist research center in Katmandu. “There is much study needed to be done.”
Bamjan has never addressed the subject in any of his speeches.
The devotees who have flocked to visit him have fewer doubts. Colorful prayer flags fluttered and incense filled the air Wednesday as the pilgrims silently approached Bamjan, who was surrounded by a line of Buddhist monks.
“I have no doubt in my mind he is a God,” said Meg Bahadur Lama, a local farmer. “He has been meditating without food and water and no human can achieve such a feat. I used to hear about such miracles in the past but now I got to see one.”

Fuel prices hikes by 20%
The price of petrol per litre has been increased by 20 per cent to NRs 100 and the price of diesel has been increased by 20 per cent to NRs 70.
Similarly, the price of kerosene per litre has been increased to NRs 65 while that of LPG has been increased by NRs 100 per cylinder to NRs 1,200, according to Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC).
The NOC has been incurring heavy loss due to the subsidy being provided in petroleum products and Nepal owes billions of rupees to the Indian Oil Corporation, the sole supplier of petroleum products to Nepal.
Even after the current adjustment in prices, NOC will have to incur loss of NRs 1.5 billion every month, sources at the NOC said.
The NOC’s losses had accumulated to the tune of NRs 14 billion, the officials said.
Meanwhile, students affiliated to the various ruling parties have blocked roads since early morning today at various places by burning tyres to oppose the price hike of petroleum goods.

Republic Nepal

KATHMANDU: Nepal on Wednesday became a Federal Democratic Republic, ending the 240-year monarchy.
The newly elected 575-member Constituent Assembly (CA) unanimously passed a proposal tabled by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and gave the erstwhile King Gyanendra 15 days to vacate the Narayanhiti Royal Palace, which will soon be turned into a public museum.
The CA will now amend the Constitution and elect a President, along with a new Prime Minister. The political parties are yet to agree on the process to elect the President.

According to the agreement reached among the parties, the President will be the patron of the Constitution and the supreme commander of the army. He will also have the authority to impose emergency rule on the recommendation of the Cabinet.
Though the candidates for President and Prime Minister have not been named, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Maoists will get premiership and the Nepali Congress, President.
The other two largest parties — Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and Madhesi People’s Rights Forum — will bag the posts of CA chairman and Vice-President.

Though the Shah dynasty ruled unified Nepal for the last 240 years, it had been in the throne of the Gorkha kingdom since 1559. King Prithivi Narayan Shah initiated the unification drive in 1742 and conquered the Kathmandu Valley in 1768.
The story of the dynasty is a saga of triumph and tragedy. In the years after the unification of the kingdom, which was fragmented into more than 60 tiny principalities, the dynasty was marred by internal feuds, betrayals and killings.
The people’s faith in monarchy was shattered after the June 1, 2001 Royal Palace massacre that killed King Birendra and his entire family. However, it was King Gyanendra’s seizure of power on February 1, 2005 that triggered a chain of events, culminating in the declaration of the republic.

The People’s Movement in April 2006, jointly declared by the mainstream parties and the Maoists, who had waged a decade-long insurgency, forced King Gyanedra to give power back to people.
